Medellin’s\u00a0Safe Route<\/a>, one of Despacio’s major\u00a0projects of the last\u00a0few years,\u00a0is about to have its first birthday.\u00a0The AMVA\u00a0has\u00a0conducted a count\u00a0of bike use twice a month since the Safe Route’s impelementation and can confirm that rush hour bicycle trips along the Avenida San Juan\u00a0have\u00a0increased between 270% (current) and 1000% (measured during the World Urban Forum in April 2014). This finding shows that improving infrastructure and connecting different parts of the city can\u00a0increase bicycle use.<\/p>\n

This news is the best way to celebrate the anniversary of the Safe Route to the WUF7. Despacio worked with a number of\u00a0entities and people last year to formulate and implement the Safe Route bicycle lane, and hopes to continue in project\u00a0evaluation and monitoring. The project was carried out in cooperation with\u00a0UN Habitat<\/a> and the Aburr\u00e1 Valley Metropolitan Area<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There are still challenges however, including putting the\u00a0lane on the roadway itself, conserving the plants and paint, and\u00a0improving interactions between pedestrians and cyclists in the\u00a0bridge’s shared space. We thank all the project’s participants and the people that use the Safe Route every day to get\u00a0around Medellin. Without them, our\u00a0dream of improving bicycle mobility along Avenida San Juan would never have become a reality.<\/p>\n
