The idea of the “Before I Die I Want To…” Wall is from Candy Chang, who in her book, says her motivation for doing so was understanding well the life stage that is normally evaded (death) and using it as a reflection for the things that each person would want to do with the rest of their life (the website for this initiative- http://beforeidie.cc). This wall was put together for the first time in New Orleans and has been reproduced in more than 200 cities around the world since, following the detailed that the project’s organizers describe on the webpage (see http://beforeidie.cc/site/build-your-own-before-i-die-wall/ )

Despacio wanted to replicate the idea with a modified version of the Wall (not because we didn’t want to do it with chalk and a blackboard rather because we didn’t have a way to do it). So we did this as part of our exhibition at the World Urban Forum in Medellin, April 5-11, 2014.

During the week of the World Urban Forum, we had the opportunity to invite people from around the world to fill the Wall. The 308 messages left on the wall referred to themes like philosophy, peace, travel, family, professions and others. In general, the messages were very inspiring, such as “leaving the world better than I found it” and other more personal ones like “I want to see my family in its own house, I want to see the town I grew up in prosperous and corruption-free.” We found the experience very positive, as did the people who filled the wall.

In June 2014, we hope to present a complete analysis of the phrases written on the walls, according to their gender, age, nationality and type of message.

This activity was part of our work related to slow life cycles and hope that it will be the first of many activities around the topic of death that scares people so much (and it shouldn’t!)
